How to use a VAT loan to protect cash flow
When a VAT loan protects working capital, how repayment is structured, and where it sits against HMRC time-to-pay.

Why operators take a VAT loan
VAT is a quarterly bill but trading cash flow is daily. Many UK SMEs hold strong revenue across the quarter, then face a tight three or four-week window where the VAT payment competes with payroll, rent and stock. A VAT loan settles the bill on the deadline and spreads the cost across the next quarter.
How repayment works
A VAT loan is structured as a short-term facility, typically three to twelve months, with fixed monthly repayments. The lender may settle directly to HMRC on your behalf or fund the operating account against a confirmed VAT submission.
Versus HMRC time-to-pay
Time-to-pay (TTP) arrangements with HMRC are interest-bearing and visible on subsequent compliance reviews. A VAT loan is privately arranged and does not appear as an HMRC arrears event. Many directors prefer the cleaner footprint, particularly where future tendering or credit lines are in view.
Decide whether finance solves a timing gap or repeats a problem
Confirm the liability
Use the submitted VAT return and HMRC account, not an estimate. Include any earlier balance, interest or penalty separately.
Forecast the next quarter
Place the proposed repayments beside payroll, rent, supplier dates and the next VAT accrual. A facility should not simply move the same shortage forward.
Compare with HMRC
Ask HMRC about Time to Pay where appropriate, then compare payment dates, interest, fees, conditions and consequences against a commercial offer.

Frequently asked
Do I need clean tax compliance to qualify?
Current compliance helps. Existing TTP arrangements are reviewed on the file but do not automatically decline.
Can the same product cover corporation tax?
Yes. The same short-term facility structure is used for corporation tax and other statutory liabilities.
