Open Banking and business loans: what it is and why it speeds decisions
Open Banking is the fastest single lever a UK applicant can pull to strengthen and accelerate a business loan decision. Here is what it is and what lenders see.

What Open Banking actually is
Open Banking is a UK regulatory framework (PSD2, overseen by the FCA and the Open Banking Implementation Entity) that lets you grant a third party read-only access to your business bank account data via secure API, no PDF statements, no login sharing.
Access is time-boxed, revocable, and audited. The connection expires after 90 days by default.
Why it produces faster decisions
The single largest cost in traditional underwriting is manual review of 3–6 months of PDF bank statements. Open Banking eliminates that step, categorised transaction data is available instantly and machine-readable.
Structured transaction data can reduce manual document handling and make patterns easier to review. It does not guarantee a decision time or approval, and an underwriter may still request supporting information.
What lenders actually see
Read-only balance and transaction history over the connected window. Categorised inflows and outflows, day-end balances, returned items, wage runs, HMRC payments, existing loan repayments.
They do NOT see: card PANs, standing order authority, payment initiation. Read-only is the whole of the access.
Share bank data with informed consent
Verify the journey
Check who is requesting access, why it is needed and which regulated provider supplies the connection. Bank credentials should only be entered in the bank's own secure flow.
Choose the right accounts
Connect the accounts that receive trading income and pay operating costs. Explain transfers between accounts so turnover is not double-counted.
Review consent
Read the data scope and consent duration, and use the bank or provider controls if access later needs to be withdrawn.

Frequently asked
Is Open Banking safe?
Yes. It is regulated by the FCA and connections are made via bank-authenticated flows (same security level as your online banking login). Read-only by design, no payments can be initiated.
Can I revoke access?
Yes, at any time from your online banking. Consent auto-expires after 90 days unless renewed.
Does using Open Banking guarantee approval?
No. It can help an underwriter verify recent trading, but the decision still depends on affordability, credit, existing commitments, the product and the provider's criteria.
