Getting a UK business loan with bad credit: what actually works
Adverse credit can narrow the available options, but it is only one part of a wider assessment. Here is how to prepare an accurate, affordable application.

Why banks decline and specialists don't
High street banks score files against automated credit-bureau thresholds. One missed payment, one CCJ, one late filing, and the file is out. Specialist alternative lenders underwrite the trading, not the score: card settlement data, bank statement inflows, sector, seasonality, and use of funds.
A business generating £40,000 a month with a director CCJ from three years ago is a different risk than a scorecard suggests. Alternative underwriting reads the full picture.
The products that work with adverse credit
Merchant cash advance is assessed partly against card sales. Revenue-based financing considers wider business receipts. Secured business loans add an asset to the assessment, while short-term property finance also depends heavily on the security and repayment exit.
What underwriters look at when credit is weak
1. Trading trend, is revenue growing, stable or declining. 2. Bank conduct, returned items, day-end balances, overdraft use. 3. The adverse event itself, one CCJ vs a pattern, satisfied vs outstanding, personal vs corporate. 4. Time since the event, the older the better. 5. Use of funds, a clear plan that generates the repayment is stronger than a working-capital top-up.
What to do before applying
Pull your business credit report from Experian or Creditsafe. Correct any errors, misfiled CCJs and outdated addresses are common. Satisfy any judgments you can afford to. File company accounts on time. Keep the business bank account clean for at least 90 days. Prepare a one-page use of funds narrative.
Rebuilding for cheaper capital later
Every repaid facility strengthens the file. Many operators start on a higher-cost specialist loan, repay cleanly for 6–9 months, then refinance into a cheaper mainstream product. The trading history built during that first facility is often worth more than the interest paid.
Present the adverse event accurately
Check all reports
Review the company file and directors' personal credit files. Correct factual errors through the relevant bureau or court process before applying.
Write a short explanation
State what happened, when, the amount, whether it is satisfied and what changed. Support the explanation with current bank conduct and trading evidence.
Protect affordability
Do not accept a short term or high payment simply to secure an approval. Stress-test the weakest trading month and all existing commitments.

Frequently asked
Will I definitely need a personal guarantee?
On most adverse-credit facilities, yes. The PG is usually limited to the balance outstanding and only enforceable after business default.
How recent can a CCJ be and still qualify?
A satisfied CCJ under £5,000 is generally not a decline in isolation. Unsatisfied CCJs, or multiple recent events, narrow the lender pool but don't close it entirely.
Do I need to disclose everything upfront?
Yes. Give an accurate account of adverse events and existing commitments. Providers run their own checks, and undisclosed information can delay or end an application.
